Raag Gauri

Raag GauriRaag Gauri  is the third raag in the raag wise collection of Shabads in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Gauri has the largest number of compositions which covers about 14 per cent of the total number of pages of the Scripture. The compositions in this raag appear on a total of 196 pages from page numbers 151 to 347. Raag Gauri in Hindustani Classical Music is of Poorvi Ang. In Gurmat Sangeet this raag is prevalent as a Bhairav Ang. Several forms of Gauri exist in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. These are: Gauri Guareri, Gauri Dakhani, Gauri Cheti, Gauri Bairagan, Gauri Dipaki, Gauri Purbi Dipaki, Gauri Purbi, Gauri-Maajh, Gauri Malava, Gauri Mala, Gauri Sorath.
In raag Gauri Rishab and Dhaivat are komal surs. In Aroh Dhaivat is absent. In Avroh all the surs are present, thus making its jatti Chadav Sumpooran. Vadi svar is Rishav and Samvadi is Pancham. This is an evening raga.The thaat of Pure Gauri is Bhairo.

    Sat siri akal maam I wanted to know if the pitch at which one sings should always be fixed or could it vary while doing riyaz which pitch do you prefer maam and while singing with another person of a different pitch how does one equalise ones voice to synchronise with the others pitch

      Sat Sri Akal Jaideep ji. Here, with pitch I understand that it is the ‘scale’ at which a singer is singing. Mostly, the scale of a singer is a fixed particular scale. Most of the male singers sing at ‘Pehla Kalla’ and female singers sing at ‘Panjvan Kalla’. But, it is not that a singer cannot singer at a lower or higher scale. Many a times as per composition the singing is done for that song at a different scale. I, mostly sing at ‘Panjvan Kalla scale’. And, when two singers are singing together they have to be mostly singing at the same scale ~ Gurpreet Kaur

    Thank you maam is it ok to sing at first white key just left of pehla kalla that is just left of first two black keys or c of western scale so if one has to sing with someone trained at another pitch say pehla kalla which I suppose is c sharp then how does one collaborate and is it fine maam to practice gurbani singing from starting from just left of first two black keys????

      Yes, it is very fine if you want to practice at first white key just left of pehla kalla. When singing with another person both of them have to be singing at the same scale. A person trained at pehla kalla can certainly adjust by singing at the lower scale. Surly, both of them have to be singing at the same scale. Certainly, singing Gurbani can be done at the scale you mentioned. ~ Gurpreet Kaur
